Caste Based Reservation

The current argument:

The constitution of India guaranteed caste based reservation (also known as quota) in education and employment for 10 years after independence.  This provision has been extended continuously since first instituted

Some of the arguments against the reservation are:

1. It deepens the caste system

2. It does not reward merit

3. It rewards "creamy layer" of prosperous "so-called lower castes" and does not benefit the deserving / deprived sections of the socitety

4. The data used to classify castes is quite old because no caste based census has taken place since 1932

Some of the arguments in favor of the reservation are:

1. The discrimination is caste based and the deprevation of benefits is on the basis of caste.  A dalit is not treated in the hospital because of his/her caste and the dalit child is relegated to second class eduction based on his/her caste therefore the benefit must be accorded based on caste

2. Economically deprived "so-called upper caste" member of the society stands a better chance at education and employment because of the "caste connections" compared to a dalit
